Seal Before the Rain Comes: Quick Repairs for Leaking Balconies and Terraces
Summer storms and sudden downpours quickly reveal cracks and poorly sealed joints on balconies, terraces and roofs. If water finds its way beneath the surface, it can cause ceramic tiles and render to detach, damp patches to develop and water to leak into interior spaces.
Minor damage can be repaired effectively if you act in time. The key is to identify the point of water ingress and select the HydroBlocker product that is suitable for the type of damage and substrate.
Where does water ingress occur most often?
Water does not usually penetrate through the centre of an undamaged surface, but through its weakest points. These most commonly include:
- cracks in concrete, screed or an existing coating;
- floor-to-wall joints;
- balcony and terrace edges;
- areas around drains and pipe penetrations;
- joints between different materials;
- damaged areas around chimneys, gutters and roof flashings.
Even a small crack can allow a considerable amount of water to penetrate during heavy rainfall. Do not wait until damp becomes visible inside the building before carrying out the repair.
How can you quickly repair a small crack or leak?
For local repairs to cracks, joints and other areas through which water penetrates, use HydroBlocker Waterproof Coating. This fibre-reinforced protective coating is designed to repair leaks and fill cracks.
It adheres to a wide range of substrates, including concrete, stone, metal, glass, wood, asphalt, bitumen and rigid PVC. It can be applied to dry or damp surfaces and even in adverse weather conditions, making it particularly useful for emergency repairs.
Application is straightforward:
- Remove dust, dirt and any loose or poorly bonded material from the surface.
- Check that the substrate is sufficiently sound and stable for application.
- Apply HydroBlocker Waterproof Coating over the crack or damaged area using a brush.
- For more extensive damage, apply a second coat if required and in accordance with the application instructions.
- Protect the coating from mechanical stress until it has fully cured.
The product is not suitable for application on EPS or PVC membranes. Always check the type of substrate before application and follow the instructions provided in the product technical data sheet.
When is a local repair not enough?
If the waterproofing has been damaged across a larger area of the balcony or terrace, simply coating an individual crack will not usually eliminate the underlying cause of the problem. In this case, a complete waterproofing system should be installed.
HydroBlocker F2-lastic is suitable for waterproofing balconies and terraces beneath ceramic tiles, mosaics or stone coverings. It is a two-component, flexible, cement-based waterproof coating that:
- bridges cracks up to 1 mm wide;
- remains flexible even at low temperatures;
- protects surfaces against water penetration;
- can be applied to horizontal and vertical mineral substrates;
- is also suitable for swimming pools.
The coating is applied in two coats perpendicular to each other, with a total thickness of 2 mm. As it remains flexible after curing and is sensitive to mechanical damage, it must be protected with a suitable final covering.
How should joints, corners and drains be sealed?
When installing waterproofing, pay particular attention to floor-to-wall joints, corners, expansion joints, drains and pipe penetrations. In these areas, HydroBlocker Tekatrak sealing tapes and preformed elements are used together with the flexible waterproofing coating.
HydroBlocker Tekatrak 120 tape is embedded into the fresh first coat of waterproofing and then covered with the coating. Specially designed elements are available for internal and external corners and penetrations, making it easier to seal critical details correctly and reliably.
How can you recognise the first signs of water ingress?
After heavy rainfall, inspect the balcony, terrace, roof joints and external walls. Pay particular attention to:
- dark or damp patches;
- white crystalline deposits or efflorescence;
- cracks in joints and concrete;
- detaching paint, render or ceramic tiles;
- peeling surface layers;
- water marks on the ceiling or walls of the room beneath the terrace or balcony.
Repairing minor damage in time can prevent moisture from spreading and help avoid more extensive repairs. If the damage is widespread or you cannot reliably determine the cause of the leak, consult a professional before starting the work.
