Install and seal door frames like a professional

Entrance doors are an important aesthetic feature of any home, but their true value only becomes apparent when they are installed correctly. An incorrect choice of materials or improper application can lead to poor sealing, heat loss and even damage to the door frame.

Proper door installation depends not only on skilled workmanship, but also on selecting high-quality installation materials and strictly following the correct procedure.

Precise door installation with TKK PU FOAM WINDOW & DOOR

Correct installation of entrance doors begins with a high-quality polyurethane foam that fills the gap between the wall opening and the door frame. TKK PU FOAM WINDOW & DOOR is a professional polyurethane foam which, thanks to its low expansion, homogeneous structure, excellent adhesion – even to modern protective surfaces – and ease of use, ensures that your doors are securely installed, well sealed and retain their functionality and appearance for many years.

Why choosing the right PU foam is crucial

When installing doors, it is essential that the foam:

  • fills the gap accurately and evenly,
  • does not cause deformation of the frame,
  • provides long-lasting sealing.

TKK PU FOAM WINDOW & DOOR is designed precisely for these requirements:

  • Controlled expansion up to 40% – low expansion and a homogeneous structure allow the foam to expand evenly and adapt to the opening without exerting excessive pressure that could bend or damage the door frame.
  • Excellent adhesion – modern doors are often protected with special coatings that make bonding more difficult. This foam is specially enhanced to adhere reliably even to very smooth surfaces.
  • High insulation performance – helps prevent heat loss and moisture ingress.

Key steps when applying polyurethane foam

For optimal entrance door installation, proper preparation of the wall opening is essential from the very beginning. The recommended opening width should be no more than 2.5 cm wider than the outer dimensions of the door frame. Larger gaps make precise installation more difficult and increase the need for additional filling materials.

During renovation projects, incorrectly sized openings are quite common. In such cases, we recommend repairing the opening wherever possible. Polyurethane foam is not a structural load-bearing material, but a sealing and insulating one. Its purpose is to fill voids and ensure airtightness – not to support the weight of the door or replace masonry stability.

It is also important that the door is not under tension during installation. Stress within the structure can lead to deformation, reduced sealing performance and problems with opening and closing.

  1. Surface preparation – surfaces must be clean, solid and dry. Foam will not adhere to dust, grease, oils, silicones or Teflon.
  2. Moistening the surfaces and foam – lightly moisten the substrate to improve adhesion and spray the foam with water after application to accelerate curing.
  3. Optimal can temperature – the can should be at room temperature to ensure the best yield.
  4. Shaking the can – shake well before use to ensure a homogeneous consistency.
  5. Partial filling of gaps – fill openings to a maximum of 70% only. The foam expands on its own, overfilling results in unnecessary waste, extra cost and additional trimming work.
  6. UV protection – once installation is complete, protect the foam, as it is not UV resistant.

Long-lasting sealing and protection with TKK SEAL Flexible Seal & bond

When installing doors or replacing old ones, it is often overlooked that polyurethane foam is not resistant to UV light and therefore needs protection. The best solution is to seal the joint with the elastic, neutral adhesive sealant TKK SEAL Flexible Seal & bond, which provides long-lasting protection and a clean, aesthetic finish.

TKK SEAL Flexible seal & bond hybrid sealant:

  • can be applied even to damp surfaces,
  • remains permanently elastic after curing,
  • is resistant to UV radiation, mould and weathering,
  • is suitable for both interior and exterior use,
  • can be painted over, does not stain, and is environmentally and user friendly.

Correct sealing technique

For optimal results, correct application technique is equally important:

  • Mask the joint edges with self-adhesive protective tape to achieve clean, neat joints.
  • Apply the sealant as evenly as possible. When interrupting work or changing cartridges, release the trigger on the manual gun and pull the plunger back.
  • Before a skin forms, smooth the sealant using the TKK SEAL Smoothing tool. Experience shows that smoothed sealant can achieve up to 50% better adhesion.
  • Remove the protective tape immediately after smoothing, before the sealant begins to cure.

Once cured, the joint is sufficiently elastic and strong to withstand vibrations, temperature fluctuations and mechanical stresses.

Professional entrance door installation depends not only on precise fitting, but also on the correct selection and combination of materials. First, reliably fill the gap with TKK PU FOAM WINDOW & DOOR, then protect the foam and finish with TKK SEAL Flexible Seal & bond. This ensures stable, well-insulated and permanently sealed entrance doors that maintain their functionality and appearance for many years to come.
