Thermal insulation of your attic – avoiding heat loss

The thermal insulation of the last panel separating you from an unheated attic is crucial for energy savings. A well-insulated attic prevents heat losses in cold months and helps prevent overheating the living quarters under the panel in the summer.

The correct insulation of your attic can also become a fun DIY project that does not require special professional knowledge. Installing insulation is a quick and easy task. You can choose from walkable or non-walkable insulation. Walkable insulation allows for safe access to key places such as chimneys and skylights, while non-walkable insulation protects other surfaces. The combination of both types of insulation provides optimal protection from heat losses and allows for occasional service access without additional interventions needed. For protection of both, horizontal and vertical surfaces, you can use insulation panels that can be attached using polyurethane glue.

With proper thermal protection of the last panel, you can reduce heating energy consumption by 20% while reducing cooling costs and improving comfort.

Preparing the surface and laying insulation

For efficient insulation, it is important to clean the surface of the last panel before starting work. Remove all dust and other impurities that might reduce the adhesion of the insulation panels. You can use insulation panels to protect both horizontal and vertical surfaces.

When laying insulation, provide uninterrupted contact between insulation panels for the highest possible efficiency, paying attention to thermal bridges. Regardless of how precisely the panels are mounted, some openings will remain upon completion of the laying. Do not use adhesive mortar to fill these openings since this would create thermal bridges. Instead, fill and insulate smaller gaps using PU adhesive.

Recommendations for the use of TKK PU FIX INSULATION ADHESIVE

Excellent insulation properties are the greatest advantage of PU adhesives. In addition, PU adhesives are available in cans that are easy to handle. Since PU adhesives further expand after application, you can also use them to fill irregularly shaped interstices effectively. That is especially important when it comes to renovations. If you perform work with due diligence, you will be rewarded with a well-insulated, draft-proof bond. Openings insulated using this method are energy-efficient and contribute to environmental protection. In addition, PU adhesives are permanently resistant to mould, moisture, bacteria, and numerous alkalis and acids. They insulate the components from heat, cold, sound and draft. They seal and adhere to parts of roofs and walls and fill out construction interstices and roof openings. The use of PU adhesives is easy, quick and neat. They are also easy to dispense, thus producing cost savings.

TKK PU FIX INSULATION ADHESIVE

For a simple and efficient implementation of the insulation, we recommend TKK PU FIX INSULATION ADHESIVE polyurethane adhesive. It is simple to use and ensures a firm adhesion without thermal bridges. PU adhesives boast excellent thermal insulation properties, with values from 0.26 to 0.04 W/(mK), which provides additional thermal protection between insulation panels and the wall of your building.

Instructions for use:

  • Preparation: Shake the adhesive well before use (approximately 30 times) and install the PVC adapter or gun, depending on the size of the area.
  • Application: Apply the adhesive to insulation panels in uniform lines. Ensure you do not cover the entire surface since the adhesive will expand minimally when cured.
  • Installation: Quickly install the panels into the appropriate location and press them against the surface. Since the adhesive hardens in a couple of minutes, ensure the panels are properly placed at the first pressure, as you will not be able to change their position later.
  • Filling openings: Fill any smaller gaps after the installation using PU adhesive foam, which will expand into openings and fill them without creating thermal bridges. It will help you prevent heat losses.

Advantages of the PU adhesive foam

Compared to cement adhesives, one of the main advantages of PU adhesive foam is that it cures quickly, allowing you to continue working after a couple of hours. This is particularly important if you are performing your work during the colder months when cement adhesives cannot be used. Using polyurethane adhesive TKK PU FIX INSULATION ADHESIVE WINTER, you can perform your work in temperatures close to zero.

Correct and safe use of adhesive foam

When using PU adhesives, always pay attention to basic precautions:

  • Use protective equipment: Wear safety gloves and goggles since PU adhesives may irritate the skin and eyes.
  • Ventilate your room: Only perform your work in well-ventilated areas or use a protective mask since PU adhesives may give off vapours.
  • Storage and disposal: After the end of work, close the can well and keep it in a dry and cool place. Dispose of waste cans under local regulations for handling hazardous waste.

Quantity and efficiency of use

With one can of TKK PU FIX INSULATION ADHESIVE, you can install up to 12m² of insulation panels. For an average attic with a surface area of 100m², you will therefore need approximately 8–9 cans. For larger projects, we recommend using the gun version, which allows for more precise application, while for smaller projects, you can use the PVC adapter.

Using high-quality insulation and following the correct installation procedure will ensure permanent thermal protection, reduce heat losses, and improve your home energy efficiency. Follow the instructions and safety procedures for a carefree application, and enjoy the savings provided by a well-insulated attic!
